We laid in bed until 11:00 hrs. and then made our way along Orchard Road to pick up my 35mm slide transparencies from the Lucky Plaza. Only 2 of the 36-exposure films had been developed, but we could collect the other 4 after 14:30 hrs.
They were initially disappointing because some were a bit wishy-washy and we had seen all of the images before in the form of George’s photographs. We picked up our plane tickets from Tanglin Shopping Centre and spent a while juggling with figures, converting our Sterling traveller’s cheques into American dollars. I changed up £100, my last cheque, for $135 American dollars.
We returned to collect the other 35mm slides, which cost me S$6.50 per 36-exposure film and perused them at leisure in the Kentucky Fried Chicken emporium. The day was almost over when we got back to Peony Mansions. We read our books and listened to music on our Walkmans as fat, greasy Carl sat contemplating his notebook.
His pallid podgy belly flopped over his shorts waistband and he greedily crammed crisps into his gob before proceeding to eat a whole pot of jam with a teaspoon. Every other guest appeared to by lying on their backs with their Walkmans cutting out the piggy noises from Carl.
This was quite a miserable place to stay as everyone moped about here all day, nobody seemed to go out anywhere, apart from us. Everyone seemed to be killing time and It was more like a condemned cell! We lit out for the Burger King at 18:00 hrs. and soon felt complete with a Whopper inside us.
We walked back via Newton Circus where we took in a banana/pineapple juice concoction in the vicinity of a loud middle-aged Aussie crowd. Back at the morgue the crowd sat around the table writing letters to home, probably telling their folks what a good time they were having!
Jimmy the caretaker hammered his stock of Guinness and sang loudly along to “Flashdance” on his Walkman. We donned our headphones and joined him at the small coffee table. We returned to our bedroom when a loud-mouthed anaemic looking Aussie bird came in and started to call the shots. Jimmy shied away from her attempts to greet him with a kiss. Apparently, she had been here before.
After a bit of tossing and turning in the damp atmosphere I eventually fell off to sleep.
